On Tuesday 1st April 2008, Posta Uganda welcomed a new team of vibrant and seasoned senior management individuals during a colourful ceremony held at the General Post Office and presided over by the Chairperson of the Board, Mrs. Proscovia Njuki.
The team comprised of the incoming Managing Director-Mr. James Arinaitwe, Company Secretary-Mr. Samuel Kaali, General Manager Finance and former acting MD-Mr. Alex Mulooki and Manager IT-Ms. Joyce Lamunu.
In her address, the Chairperson said “Since 2002 Posta Uganda has been undertaking several reforms with an aim to become the best postal service provider in Uganda and beyond. The reforms have brought about a number of improvements such as the introduction of new products and services such as Posta at schools, Direct Marketing… which are tailored to meet our customer’s needs. Over the years, Posta has critically reviewed its human resource function; emphasis has been on placing the right people in the right places and today Posta boasts of a highly motivated staff that is committed and hungry for success. I believe that the acquisition of the widely experienced and versatile new Managing Director, Company Secretary, General Manager Finance and Manager IT, will further guarantee success for Posta Uganda.”
Posta@schools excites schools in Northern Uganda
In a bid to capture the highly lucrative and vast schools market in Uganda and Northern Uganda in particular, Posta Uganda has embarked on an extensive promotion drive to publicize the Posta@schools service. Posta@schools in a new product specifically designed to provide cheap and efficient postal services to schools. The service offers free paper, envelope, pre-paid stamp plus daily pickups and costs only 300/= in Uganda and 700/= in East Africa. Amos Ebiru the Regional Accountant North said that the promotion in Northern Uganda has generated a lot of excitement among schools. During the colorful draws held at St. Catherine Secondary School in Lira and Sacred Heart Secondary School in Gulu. Many lucky students walked away with T-shirt, umbrellas, key holders and other fabulous prizes. Similar draws will be held throughout the country in the next coming months.
PROHIBITED ITEMS
1. Narcotics and psychotropic substances;
2. Obscene or immoral articles;
3. Articles which, by their nature or their packing, may expose officials or the general public to danger, or soil or damage other items, postal equipment or third-party property;
4. Explosive, flammable or radioactive materials and other dangerous substances,
5. Live animals;
6. Coins, bank notes ; currency notes or securities of any kind payable to bearer, travelers’ cheques, platinum, gold or silver, whether manufactured or not, precious stones, jewels or other valuable articles:
7. Items containing articles made of glass or fragile articles or liquids
8. The postal administration of Iran (Islamic Rep.) does not accept items containing articles contrary to the principles of the Islamic religion.
9. Perishable substances such as food stuffs ie fish, fruits.
10. Traditional local herbs in form of powder or any other form.
Posta Honors Long Serving Staff
On 15th February 2008, Posta Uganda honored its long serving staff that had decided to move on after having served the organization for an average of 25 to 30 years. This was held during the quarterly staff meeting, held at the General Post Office and attended by management and staff.
Those honored at the event are:
§ Henry Bossa Lumu, former Operations Support Manager.
§ Raymond Enyaru, former Manager Training.
§ Henry Byamugisha, former Acting General Manager Finance.
§ Sylvester Kamuhangire, former Manager Training.
§ Hajji Suleiman Magala, former Manager Investigations.
§ Gabriel Oloka, former Manager Investigations.
§ J. B Sseruma, former Manager Welfare in the Human Recourse Department.
§ John Andrua, former Manager Arua Post Office.
As a token of appreciation for the tremendous they had done for Posta they were honored with Certificates of Service and exquisite handicraft gifts.
In his acceptance speech on behalf of his colleagues, Hajji Magala thanked the management and staff for having honored them. He appealed to the staff to work diligently, desist from misusing company resources and uphold the organization’s values and philosophy.
At the same meeting acting Managing Director, Alex Mulooki highlighted the achievements attained and challenges faced by the company over the last quarter. Furthermore, he made a presentation that compared the second half year performance for 2007 against the same period in 2006 and the result indicated that some improvement had been achieved in areas such as:
International EMS business grew by 10%
M-Bag and Contract Mail grew by 54%
95% of mail handled was successfully delivered to its destination.
The volume of mail handled in this period was 6.2 million mail items and this resulted into a 2.5 million mail item increment as compared to 2006.
The MD also informed staff that a new training prgramme for all staff will soon be in place to ensure that everyone is well equipped with the knowledge and skills that will enable them serve customers better. He further stated that new products and services will soon be unveiled to cater for all customer needs.
