Message by the Managing Director of Posta Uganda at the occasion of the Pan African Post Day, 18th January, 2010
Today Posta Uganda is delighted to join the entire African continent to mark the Pan African Postal Union (PAPU) Day, with the theme "The Post, a veritable means for bridging the digital divide"
This theme comes at an optimal time when Posta Uganda is undertaking a huge leap forward in the quest to become a modern and efficient communications service provider, with modern technology as the driving factor behind this revolution.
On 11th December 2009, we commissioned an ambitious ICT project called Tele-centres, with a total of twenty state-of-the-art internet service centres being commissioned in twenty locations spread across Uganda. The decision to invest in this project was sole based on the need to bring our services closer to customers and also bridge the digital divide between urban and rural Uganda. The fully equipped Tele-centres offer high-speed internet services, fax, scanning and secretarial services at very competitive prices
In addition, we have embarked on the introduction of other ICT based products and services:
1. We will soon launch an internet based domestic and international money transfer service which will provide Ugandans a secure and affordable way to send or receive money.
2. The automation of our counter services at major Post Offices across the country is on-going.
3. This year we intend to launch the pilot project for the Post Code and Geographical mapping system in selected areas, this will test run our door-to-door Postal delivery service.
4. We have expanded our network to reach the furthermost ends of Uganda. We are investing substantially in the refurbishment of the infrastructure so as to meet the desired standards of our customers.
These milestones are part of our plans to transform Posta Uganda into a core communications service provider.
We have put in place plans to further modernize our services by fusing ICT in our service delivery chain. We anticipate that ICT will play a big role in the transformation of Posta Uganda into a world class service provider by making our range of products and services more accessible, affordable and efficient.
On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of Posta Uganda, I wish to take this opportunity to thank the Government of Uganda for its continued support which they have rendered us. In that same regard, I wish to thank the Uganda Communications Commission for its guidance and support which has greatly enabled us to fulfil our mandate. Last but not least, I wish to convey our sincere gratitude to all our customers for the continued support and loyalty. We pledge to serve you even better this year.
I WISH YOU ALL HAPPY PAPU DAY CELEBRATIONS.
